Over the last week, our citizens here in Yancey County have seen incredible stories of resilience, tragedy, and generosity as people have come together and rallied to meet the challenges of this catastrophic storm. Through it all, our community has shown incredible strength of character as we have, together, met the challenges of each new day. While the search and rescue efforts are continuing, the Sheriff’s Office has worked with our partners at the State and Federal level to preserve life and honor those who have passed. While final numbers are still pending, the current official death toll from the storm stands at 8 storm related deaths as well as 1 death from circumstances that the medical examiner believes to be natural causes. As we reflect on what we have lost and mourn with those who mourn, we remain incredibly thankful for the privilege of serving the people of our mountain home.
